About ECOSTAT

ECOWAS has embarked on the harmonisation of economic and financial policies through a multilateral surveillance mechanism adopted in December 1999 by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. Comparable economic data are an essential requirement for the evaluation of the process. Within this framework, the ECOWAS Secretariat received European Commission funding (8 ACP ROC 44 - ECOSTAT) to assist in this process. Objectives of the project are:

1. Elaborate program to develop statistical systems in West African

2. Increase comparability of GDP figures

3. Increase comparability of consumer price indices

4. Collection and regular distribution of external trade statistics

5. Creation of database for multilateral surveillance mechanism

6. Institutional support to the Executive Secretariat and national statistical offices
